Frank Townsell taught formerly at the University of British Columbia, and is now on the staff of the music department of City College of San Francisco.
Townsell wants to impart to students a love of music through the piano, with the idea that everyone can learn to play and become a musician, once the basic principles are understood. He feels that every student is unique and that one must have a flexible attitude in class. One of Townsell's students has participated in an international competition in Paris. Former students send him messages of appreciation for his teaching. The pianist explains:
My students are all working enthusiastically, which inspires me to share more with them. One is playing an arrangement of Beethoven's slow movement to the 5th Symphony. His sister is playing a Liszt Etude de Concert. Another is playing an arrangement of music from the movie Black Orpheus It gives me joy to see my students developing their skills and fulfulling themselves as musicians through the piano.
Frank Townsell lost his sight six years ago, and is "legally blind", but his vision has improved and he is optimistic about the future. He is still available for concerts, lectures, recitals, festival appearances, and presentations for 2008, depending on the current state of his vision.
